Artist statement

Lyric singer, actor and director of Chilean scene, with extensive professional and academic trajectory. He is the founder of the La Diva Children’s Opera Company and the Ópera Viva Foundation.

As a solo singer he performs recitals at Sala Isidora Zegers; Cultural Center of Spain, Chilean National Theater, National Library, Municipal Theater of Santiago, Radio Universidad de Chile and other rooms. He has sung in the operas The Magic Flute, Bastian and Bastiana (Mozart). L’Incoronazione di Poppea, (Monteverdi). Hansel and Gretel, (Humperdinck) and in the musicals Man of the Spot (Leigh, Wasserman), Annie (Strouse, Charnin and Meehan), La Pergola de Las Flores (Aguirre and Flores del Campo), Tartufo (Molière). Mestizo heart (Pinto) and others. He has worked with directors Pedro-Pablo Prudencio, Juan Edwards, Sylvia Soublette, Hanns Stein, and others. He participates as a soloist in the recording of Cartas del Poeta que Duerme en una Silla, by Edgardo Cantón, on text by Nicanor Parra (CD Young Performers of Chilean Music, directed by Fabio Pérez) and on the song series Friso Araucano, by Carlos Isamitt . CD with the Chilean Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Rodolfo Saglimbeni, on a project of the SVR Label, for the Bicentennial of Chile.

He was assistant in the singing chair of Professor Hanns Stein, professor of stage movement in the chair of opera and acting teacher for the singing career at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile. He has also been a singing teacher for acting careers at universities: UNIACC; Diego Portales; Academy of Christian and Technological Humanism of Chile. He has given workshops for the community at the Balmaceda Arte Joven Cultural Center, the Theater Actors Union of Chile and the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Quilicura.

He has played leading and co-leading roles in the companies Teatro Azul, Comarca La Comarca, Compañía Arte America, in works by Federico García Lorca, Molière, Isidora Zegers and others. In the VII National Dramaturgy Show, he received critical comments from critics for his work in “El Desvarío” by renowned playwright Jorge Díaz. He has worked with directors Ana María Vallejo, Eduardo Yedro, Alejandro Trejo and others.

He has been responsible for the dramaturgy and stage direction of the operas: The Descent of Orpheus to Hell, Charpentier, Bastian and Bastiana, Mozart, L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Monteverdi, Hansel and Gretel, Humperdinck, among others . He has worked in collaboration with directors Hanns Stein, Eduardo Moubarak, Sylvia Soublette and others. Together with director Fabio Pérez, he won a competition from the Department of Research and Development of the University of Chile, for the realization of a contemporary stage version of the opera Acis y Galatea, by Händel, presented at the Huemul Theater in Santiago.

He works as a producer for National Television of Chile and for Pianist Roberto Bravo.

Between 2014 and 2017 he directed the productions TOPOS EL PLAGUE QUE HABITAS, for the National Institute of Youth. HANSEL AND GRETEL, MY FIRST OPERA, for the Regional Government of Santiago and MELINA, for the Delegation of the European Union in Chile. These works have been presented indiscriminately in the Skate Park of Parque Bustamante, Las Majadas Palace in Pirque, Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center and Mapocho Cultural Center.

He studied five years of Actoral training with the Director Ana María Vallejo.

He studied the Bachelor of Musical Arts and the Superior Interpretation course with a mention in Singing.

He is currently a Master in Music as an Interdisciplinary Art.

Receives the Best Dramaturgical Contribution Award in the III Children’s and Youth Theater Festival, organized by the Culture Division of the Ministry of Education (1993).

He received critical acclaim for his performance in El Desvarío, by renowned author Jorge Díaz, winner of the VII National Dramaturgy Show, directed by Alejandro Trejo (2001).

It is titled with maximum distinction at the University of Chile (2003).

Earn National Music Fund, to hold a Master’s Degree in Music as an Interdisciplinary Art at the University of Barcelona (2017).

Gerardo is a permanent artist at Marquez Art Gallery Barcelona.
