Artist statement

New York artist Susan Parker Martin does intense studies of local, personal subject matter, imbuing emotion and intellect into her desaturated hues and deliberate mark making.   Born in Nashville, Tn, she had two careers: one in teaching and one in fund raising for non-profit organizations before pursuing her dream of becoming an artist.

She began as a ceramic artist, studying at Penland School of Craft (North Carolina) with Cynthia Bringle and at the New School University in New York with Neil Tetkowski.   After some years, she began to be more interested in the process of applying color and gradually shifted to painting in watercolor.

She studied with Susan Shatter and Paul Ching-Bor at the Art Students League of New York.  She enjoys working very large in watercolor because of the physicality of engaging fully with the paper, the pigment and the water.  Her recent body of work in self-portraits is an exploration of the wide range of emotions of aging.

She is inspired particularly by the work of Alice Neel and Lucian Freud.
